Approximation by ruled surfaces

چکیده
Given a surface or scattered data points from a surface in 3-space, we show how to approximate the given data by a ruled surface in tensor product B-spline representation. This leads us to a general framework for approximation in line space by local mappings from the Klein quadric to Euclidean 4-space. The presented algorithm for approximation by ruled surfaces possesses applications in architectural design, reverse engineering, wire electric discharge machining and NC milling. c © 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. Characterizations of Slant Ruled Surfaces in the Euclidean 3-space
In this study, we give the relationships between the conical curvatures of ruled surfaces generated by the unit vectors of the ruling, central normal and central tangent of a ruled surface in the Euclidean 3-space E^3. We obtain differential equations characterizing slant ruled surfaces and if the reference ruled surface is a slant ruled surface, we give the conditions for the surfaces generate...
متن کاملCone spline approximation via fat conic spline fitting
Fat conic section and fat conic spline are defined. With well established properties of fat conic splines, the problem of approximating a ruled surface by a tangent smooth cone spline can then be changed as the problem of fitting a plane fat curve by a fat conic spline. Moreover, the fitting error between the ruled surface and the cone spline can be estimated explicitly via fat conic spline fit...
متن کامل5-Axis Freeform Surface Milling using Piecewise Ruled Surface Approximation
This paper presents a 5-axis side milling scheme for freeform surfaces based on automatic piecewise ruled surface approximation. With this scheme, resulting surface nish is accurate and pleasing, and has a smaller scallop height compared to ball-end milling. The ruled surface approximation can be made arbitrarily precise resulting in an overall fast milling operation that satis es tight toleran...
متن کاملApproximation of ruled and canal surfaces by means of subdivision
Subdivision schemes were originally defined for data in affine spaces and their applications were thus restricted to polygons and polyhedra. Nowadays subdivision schemes for data in arbitrary manifolds are available and the convergence and smoothness behaviour is studied. This opens a wide field of applications and makes it posible to apply suitably modified known refinement schemes to sets of ...
متن کاملRuled Free Forms
The geometry of ruled surfaces is highly relevant for freeform architectural design, owing to the fact that any negatively curved freeform shape can be approximated by a smooth union of ruled surface strips. This information is important for the efficient manufacturing of both skins and underconstructions. The present paper discusses how to algorithmically solve this approximation problem. In p...
